Major General Patrick R. Cleburne

Born, March 16, 1828

Patrick Ronayne Cleburne was promoted in the Confederate army at an astounding rate – enlisting as a private in early 1861, and rising to the rank of Major General by December 1862.  Highly respected by both his soldiers and his enemies, he showed great physical and moral courage.  In fact, it took great courage to issue his controversial – but sincere – January 1864 proposal to arm slaves to fight for the Confederacy. I have found it very interesting how the winners get to re-write history.
In 1863 General Cleburne faced off against Union
General Thomas
at Chickamauga. Cleburne’s and General John C. Breckinridge’s assaults forced Gen. Thomas to call repeatedly for reinforcements.  In November 1863 the Confederate army was forced to retreat after the battle of Chattanooga.  However, Cleburne had defeated every assault against his men eventually charging his attackers.  After the battle, Cleburne and his men were charged with covering the retreat.
The Hardee Flag:
In 1864 General Joseph Johnston wanted to standardize all Confederate Battle Flags in the design of The Army of Northern Virginia. General Cleburne appealed to President Jefferson Davis to keep the Hardee Flag. A flag his men had fought and died under. He felt his troops had developed considerably Esprit De Corps fighting under that flag and wanted to keep it. It was said his men refused to fight under the
conventional
battle flag. President Davis agreed to let them keep their Hardee Flag. In most paintings depicting General Cleburne in his last charge it has his men
carrying
the Hardee Flag. Thus the background to this image is very apropos.
Prior to the campaigning season of 1864, Cleburne became engaged to Susan Tarleton of Mobile, Alabama. Their marriage was never to be as Cleburne was killed during an ill conceived assault ordered by General John Bell Hood, which Cleburne opposed, on Union fortifications at the Battle of Franklin, just south of Nashville, Tennessee, on November 30, 1864. He was last seen advancing on foot toward the Union entrenchment with his sword raised after his horse was shot out from under him. Confederate war records indicate he died of a shot to the abdomen.
General Cleburne's remains were laid to rest at St. John's Church near Mount Pleasant, Tennessee, where they remained for six years. In 1870 he was disinterred and returned to his adopted hometown of Helena, Arkansas, with much fanfare. (His specific location of interment is in dispute. Various sources claim Maple Hill Cemetery, Magnolia Cemetery, and Evergreen Cemetery in Helena.) There is a nice moment to him in

This lot is for one (1) oil painting reproduction as shown above with the flag (the flag has only been
removed
from the headline description).

printed on satin finish archival canvas
with archival inks and sprayed with two coats of UV protection. Each print is made to order and takes four (4) days to cure, then UV sprayed before it is packed and mailed.
Note a considerable amount of time has been spent on detailing the General's face and especially his eyes.

seem a little confused as to my descriptions: (I want nobody to be disappointed in there purchase, I take great pride in what I do).
Let me make myself perfectly clear. What you see, is what you get, the image on eBay is the PRODUCT you will receive, and in all cases better. I have described in great detail each item and exactly what it is. If you have any requests or questions please do not hesitate to ask before you order, I will be happy to answer them.
Know what you are buying.
It is what it is, a
Museum Quality print
made and restored from a digital file using the old glass negative and in rare instances a print, it is
NOT
an original print made in  the 1860's or 1870's and restored, (seems I had one buyer expecting an original restored print made in 1870 with actual signatures for .95, America is a wonderful place), recently I had an individual that wanted to return a framed photo because it was not what they envisioned (defined as imagined), I refused and eBay/PayPal agreed.  it is a
restored
archival
digital reproduction, not some cheap print. If you want cheap, shoddy prints, they are everywhere else, not here.  These prints are produce with archival inks, on archival canvas and UV spayed to last 150 years 24/7 in direct sun light. If they are framed, UV glass is used, add 50 years. Again, if have any questions please ask.
