Sorvall JB-4A Microtome
For sale- a Sorvall JB-4A Microtome.
It would appear that the difference between a 4 and a 4A is that the 4A is motorized?
Anyway, the thing powers up and when you hit the button to cut it goes about half way through the stroke, maybe a bit further, and then stops without finishing or cutting off.
So I took the top off to see if perhaps maybe just the belts were slipping and could maybe be adjusted.
But from my observation the motor and the belts are fine, they turn what I would call a drive shaft that runs forward up to the crank and the drive shaft continues to spin even after the chopping motion runs out of steam.
So I am not sure what to make of that.
It goes through the complete cutting motion just fine MANUALLY, so if you don’t mind being that bit of manpower maybe you can use it as is.
It does come with both a sample holder and a blade holder as pictured, something a number of the ones being offered lack.
I have no idea how to retract the sample holder nor can I say if it advances correctly. Given all of this I am selling it for parts or repair only,

Missing one of the two circular adjustment knobs on one side.
Yes, I will remove parts so that you don’t have to ship the whole thing as long as it isn’t an intricate time consuming task.
But keep in mind that then leaves me with essentially a piece of scrap metal so I’m not going to do that for ten cents on the dollar.

It would be shipping from 27948 in a box presumed to be 28x16x16, 70 pounds.
Not sure it is quite that heavy, need to get it on the scales.
I do not normally have a box that size just sitting around so it may take awhile to get it packed and shipped.
The ebay shipping calculator has had personal problems that they seem unable or unwilling to rectify since at least January of 2017.
Lately at least they show an outrageous shipping charge and then actually charge you that (they get 9+% of the shipping too so obviously anything they can do to pad the delivered total is money in the bank).
So if the charge looks outrageous it isn’t me coming up with that number.
If it turns out to be way too much I will refund a portion of it after I know what my actual cost is, but you should remind me as it takes almost a month for the shipping cost to get posted to my account.
